The Illustrated Guide to the French Revolution, hardcover edition
The idea was to offer the early bird backers the wonderful hardcover edition of this book (next to the discount) in order to offer them a guide into this fascinating era of history.
I'm a history buff. Many eras of our past are able to arouse my interest. Strange as it may seem however, the French Revolution has always been a subject I avoided. Throughout life, I was satisfied in knowing when it started and that Napoleon ended it. Those ten years in between, remained a blank space as it was way too chaotic and complex for me.
When Jason St. Just got in touch with me, suggesting a „ready to publish" game about the French Revolution in late 2022, I hesitated. After having a first play on TTS with him, I was completely hooked. I learned so much during our first play that I started to get really, really interested in that period and its significance for France and Europe. Today I've made a 180° turn: what a fascinating topic the French Revolution actually is.
Not surprisingly, when talking to fellow gamers and fellow historians, most of them had the same relation to the French Revolution, they confirmed my initial aversion: it was a very chaotic and complex time, everything happened so fast so that it was difficult to understand who was who before they ended under the guillotine, so many different political factions, so many events and laws...
It did not take long for the idea to be born of offering a little historical guide to the folks among you who are history buffs but - like myself initially - have avoided the French Revolution in the past. Why not offer a lively, readable blueprint, a basis, as a companion to the game „1793: Patriots & Traitors"? At its core, the French Revolution is actually a series of logical chain reactions to various unforeseen circumstances and political infighting.
