The English Civil War was actually three separate conflicts between those supporting royal versus Parliamentary supremacy in England, plus Scottish and Irish factions bent on securing their interests. Covering the period 1639-1652, the waxing and waning of fortunes of the protagonists led England from a would-be absolute monarchy to the Commonwealth, either a republic or dictatorship depending on one's viewpoint. The fighting occurred late in the Pike & Shot period of European warfare, when the importance of pikes was dwindling. This issue of the Quarterly will discuss the course of the wars, along with the evolution of the armies through the period, culminating in the Parliamentary New Model Army.
