The English Civil War was actually three separate conflicts between those supporting royal versus Parliamentary supremacy in England, plus Scottish and Irish factions bent on securing their interests. Covering the period 1639-1652, the waxing and waning of fortunes of the protagonists led England from a would-be absolute monarchy to the Commonwealth, either a republic or dictatorship depending on one's viewpoint.
