This book gives an overview of the French conquest of Morocco between 1900 and 1926. Whilst providing a general outline of the conquest of Morocco the book concentrates on the use of forts and other fortifications built by the French Foreign Legion to secure the territory gained and pacify the areas of operation.

The book looks at the construction of the outposts and forts, garrison life in them in peace and war, operations in the desert and mountains, and desperate last stands. Particular emphasis is given to two sites where the author undertook detailed archaeological investigations as well as extensive use of primary sources (many of which are now out of print).

The book contains numerous plans, maps, and photographs to support the text. Many of the photographs show the forts as they are today, and feature imagery of the archaeological digs and some of the items found. This new book provides an interesting insight into the French colonial experience in Morocco, and the ways and means in which they attempted to control and defend the land against numerous counter insurgencies.

"This is an excellent sweep of the French forts in Morocco in the early 1920s, covering not just the fortifications (from major fort to tiny watchtower) but also the garrisons in terms of men, equipment, logistics, tactics and example actions. At first glance, £25 might seem excessive for just 100 pages, but around a third of the book comprises high-quality plans, maps and photos, including the results of archaeological digs.....This book is purpose-made for wargaming, whether skirmish, main battle, operational or strategic. My favourite scale is 10mm, and (for example) Pendraken’s five packs of inter-war French Foreign Legion would form a good core of a siege-and-relief scenario. Highly recommended: an exciting tale, a good history, and a promising wargame setting." Chris Jarvis, Miniature Wargames
