The first bombing in Italy by the RAF Fire Command took place on 11 and 12 June 1940. The results were quite poor as only a few of the 36-year-old Whitley bombers managed to achieve their goals. After this lousy start, the RAF Fire Command carried out some additional night raids in northern Italy until mid-July 1940, when the Fire Command reduced Italian missions to help bomb German naval targets preparing for the invasion of Britain along the French coast.
