“I would not hesitate to risk two parachute divisions…if with one blow I could get my hands on the whole [enemy] high command”.
—Adolf Hitler, Conference Minutes, September 17, 1944.
Historically the Soviets became aware of the existence of Hitler’s military headquarters in Rastenburg, Prussia (nicknamed “The Wolf ’s Lair” by the German military—Wolf was Hitler’s codename) from prisoner interrogations during Operation Bagration. In August 1944, Soviet reconnaissance planes overflew the zone, dropping leaflets with lists of German personnel working there, urging them to defect now, or be held accountable. What if, earlier, the Soviets had dropped…something else?
A Cornered Wolf is a “what if” game that explores what could have happened had Stalin decided to launch an air assault (Операция «Волчья охота»—Operation “Wolf Hunt”) in July or August against the Nazi dictator’s command headquarters. Design Paul Rohrbaugh places us right in the middle of the action with a map of The Wolf’s Lair and its three forbidding security zones, and well-armed security forces.
The German player must trust quick reactions by his units can either defeat an attack outright or failing that, form an escape corridor for the German leadership. The Soviet player must go in understanding that evacuation and even the survival of the raiders will be secondary to the successful elimination of the Nazi and military leaders there, as well as the reduction and/or elimination of the “Wolf ’s Lair.”
Refight this hypothetical “what if’ action with A Cornered Wolf and see what might have been the decisive event of WW2!
